Air Sea Land

Okuda’s landfall in Boston’s Seaport

In its most extensive and exciting art installation yet, Boston’s Seaport transforms the district’s eponymous thoroughfare with the unveiling of Air, Sea, Land by Spanish contemporary urban artist Okuda San Miguel

7 kaleidoscopic, monumental sculptures now line Seaport Boulevard, a principal street in the district. Influenced by animals and natural elements, these pieces are colorful and vibrant explorations on themes of life, intersection, and coexistence. The artist reflects on ancient ideas that man has wrestled with since the dawn of time: genesis and the creation of diverse animal species. As the largest public art project of OKUDA, the series speaks both to Boston’s rich history as well as its boundless future. “Art must be present in public spaces constantly and my mission is to transform these spaces in a way that further enhances the passerby’s experience. I aim to create vibrant places that are filled with color and positivity, helping and hoping to change the lives of people. I want people to stop looking at the pavement and start looking up and around,” said Okuda San Miguel.

Following the debut of the sculptures, Okuda’s iconic pop-surrealist style extended to Boston’s City Hall Plaza as he completed the feature art wall at Boston’s HUBWeek 2018. Directly influenced by the Seaport installations, OKUDA painted live a 40x18-foot mural, exploring respect, diversity, and harmony between beings and their environment.
